Common questions

How do I add a new friend?

Hold your phones together for about a second. Both phones need TapYap installed and Bluetooth on. The app will recognize the tap and connect you automatically.

The tap isn't working.

Things to check:

If you've tried all that, the QR-code fallback in Settings works on any phone with a camera.

My friend appears red even though they're online.

Background-close the app (swipe away in your recents) and reopen it. That re-establishes our presence connection. If they still appear red, they may not yet be a first- or second-degree contact — only those people show presence.

How do I block someone?

Open their chat, tap the menu, choose "Block." They will not be notified. Their messages stop reaching you and your network status disappears from their app.

How do I leave a group?

Open the group, tap the name at the top, scroll to "Leave group." Group history stays on your device unless you also delete the conversation.

Why does the app need Bluetooth?

For the offline mesh. When the cell signal drops out (festivals, basements, schools with locked-down WiFi) TapYap can hop messages through nearby phones over Bluetooth Low Energy. Bluetooth is also one half of the tap-to-connect handshake.

Why does the app ask for battery-optimization exemption?

To keep Bluetooth running in the background. Without the exemption, Android suspends BLE within minutes of leaving the app, and you'd miss messages from nearby friends. We don't run any battery-heavy work outside of mesh activity.

What happens to my account if I uninstall the app?

Server-side records persist for up to 30 days, then auto-delete. To delete immediately, see data deletion.

Can I use TapYap on multiple devices?

Currently each install is its own identity — no multi-device sync. We're working on a paired-device flow that lets your phone and tablet share an identity. Stay tuned.

I forgot to grant a permission. How do I fix it?

The app surfaces a small hazard icon in the top bar when something needs your attention. Tap it for a one-tap fix that deep-links into the right Android settings page. You can also go to Settings → Apps → TapYap → Permissions to manage them yourself.
