Delete your account & data

Two paths: the in-app option deletes everything in seconds and works without contacting us. The email option is for people who've lost access to the app or want extra confirmation.
Option 1 — In the app
The fastest way:
- Open TapYap
- Tap your avatar (top-left) → Settings
- Scroll to Delete account
- Confirm
That triggers two things, immediately:
- Your tap_id, profile, connections, conversations, and messages are deleted from our servers
- The local app data on your phone is wiped
Once deleted, your contacts will see your name disappear from their list. They will not be notified. Any messages you sent that were already delivered remain on the recipients' phones — we can't reach into someone else's device to remove them.
Option 2 — By email
If you've uninstalled the app or can't access it, email privacy@tapyap.com from any address. Include:
- Your TapYap display name (whatever you went by in the app)
- The approximate date you signed up, if you remember
- Optional: your tap_id (it's a UUID; advanced users may have it from a backup)
We'll respond within 7 business days to confirm we've located the account and started the deletion. Full deletion completes within 30 days, including from offsite backups.
What's deleted vs what isn't
Deleted
- Your profile (display name, avatar, bio, accent color)
- Your tap_id and the connection rows recording who you've tapped
- All messages where you are the sender (server-side copy)
- Receipts (delivery and read state) tied to you
- Any media you've uploaded (photos, voice notes)
- Your auth token and device record
- Pairing telemetry events tied to your tap_id
- Approximate-location records (geo_lat / geo_lon / geo_region)
Not deleted
- Messages you sent that have already been delivered to recipients — those live on their phones
- Group conversations you participated in remain visible to other members; your name will show as "deleted user"
- Aggregated, anonymized usage counts (e.g., "1.2M messages last month") that don't reference your account
Restoring a deleted account
Account deletion is permanent. We don't offer a grace period or undelete. After deletion, the only way back is to install the app fresh and tap-to-pair with your friends again — you'll get a new tap_id and your old contacts won't automatically reconnect.
